Another disturbing trend we’ve seen in foreign dental offices: skipping the basics. Some clinics do not use ultrasonic scalers at all. Instead, they may only polish the teeth—leaving plaque and tartar beneath the gumline untouched. Polishing makes teeth look shiny, but it does nothing to treat gum disease or stop bone loss.

A proper dental cleaning includes scaling—above and below the gum line—with sterile instruments, followed by polishing. This is the standard we follow every day in our practice.
