The Hidden Dangers of Foreign Dentistry: What You’re Not Being Told

In recent years, ‘dental tourism’ has exploded in popularity. The promise? Cheap crowns, implants, or full-mouth restorations for a fraction of U.S. prices—often bundled with a beach vacation. But what’s not being advertised are the risks. At Vibrant Dentistry of Tucson, we’ve seen firsthand the fallout from patients who sought care overseas: failed procedures, hidden infections, and irreversible damage.

Why Patients Consider Foreign Dentistry

Cost is the number one driver. U.S. dental care—especially without insurance—can be expensive. Add in long wait times, insurance runarounds, and limited access to specialists, and it’s no wonder some people look abroad. Clinics in Mexico, Costa Rica, Turkey, and Colombia advertise major procedures at 1/3 the price—or less.

What They Don’t Tell You

  • Sterilization standards may be lower or inconsistently enforced
  • Dental Materials may not meet U.S. safety standards
  • Licensing requirements for dentists vary greatly – and some ‘dentists’ are not formally trained
  • Complications or infections may not appear until after you return home
  • There is no legal recourse or malpractice protection if things go wrong
  • Follow-up care is nearly impossible

Real Patient Experiences We’ve Treated

At our practice, we’ve had patients return from foreign dental trips with crowns that didn’t fit, implants placed into infected bone, and one case where cement used for bridgework caused chemical burns to the gums. These patients paid again—often more than the original procedure—just to fix the damage.

Possible consequences of 'dental tourism'

“But My Friend Went and Had No Problems…”

Some people do get lucky. But you shouldn’t make permanent medical decisions based on someone else’s anecdote. Dentistry is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. You might need different materials, bone grafting, or have underlying conditions that go unnoticed in a rushed consult.

The Myth of “Just as Good”

Many overseas clinics are designed for speed and volume, not long-term results. In the U.S., dentists are held to strict standards for continuing education, material sourcing, documentation, and liability. We also maintain sterilization logs, infection control protocols, and are accountable to the dental board. These safeguards exist for a reason.

The Risks of Orthodontic Treatment Abroad

Orthodontic procedures like braces or aligner therapy are often advertised overseas at a steep discount. But orthodontics is not just about straight teeth – it’s about precise, long-term movement of bone and roots. Poorly planned or executed orthodontic treatment abroad can cause permanent damage including:

  • Root resorption (where the roots of teeth dissolve from incorrect pressure)
  • Broken or severely worn teeth due to misaligned bite forces
  • Chronic pain in the jaw or muscles due to poor bite alignment
  • Swelling and discomfort from improperly monitored tooth movement
  • Increased long-term costs from needing corrective treatment afterward
  • No financial or legal recourse if the damage becomes irreversible
  • Incomplete cement removal when brackets are taken off, leading to decay

They Don’t Actually “Clean” Your Teeth

Another disturbing trend we’ve seen in foreign dental offices: skipping the basics. Some clinics do not use ultrasonic scalers at all. Instead, they may only polish the teeth—leaving plaque and tartar beneath the gumline untouched. Polishing makes teeth look shiny, but it does nothing to treat gum disease or stop bone loss.

A proper dental cleaning includes scaling—above and below the gum line—with sterile instruments, followed by polishing. This is the standard we follow every day in our practice.
